FAUSTA & ANGELA

ABOUT FAUSTA DUCA
I work for the community; where there's a need I go. We do things like lane pelose classes, helping at the senior center, and organizing fundraisers. We have helped since we were young, when we were in charge of the mosciarella fire because the parents had other things to do. We had to be careful not to burn them. We have eaten lane pelose since we were tiny. At 15, we were expected to make them, because our parents went out to work in the morning and wouldn’t return until nightfall. Now we don’t eat it every day, and this tradition is at risk. Serving lane pelose has become something we do for parties and events.

ABOUT ANGELA PONZO
When I lived in Rome, we returned every October to harvest chestnuts and make mosciarella. Then we decided to move back and live like peasant farmers, even though we are pensioners. Making mosciarella reminds me of my childhood when I would collect them with my family. Every corner of the chestnut grove had a name, and my grandmother would say to me, “When you finish class, I’m in xyz area,” and I would walk down to the groves to meet them. The donkey was loaded, and I would take it to the cassette to start the drying process. If we burned them, we were in big trouble!
