Read an interview with Leonardo Mannella below, Art Director at Sky Italia and remote worker who relocated from Milan to Castel San Pietro Romano 3 years ago in search of a slower, more connected way of life.
I was born in Tivoli and studied architecture in Rome at Facoltà di Architettura before following my passion for graphic design, typography, and visual arts. My career eventually took me to Milan, where I spent 20 years working in art direction at Sky TV on their entertainment channels and TV series. I have worked most recently with directors Damiano and Fabio D'Innocenzo, and done a few series with Paolo Sorrentino. When the pandemic shifted my work to being fully remote, I knew it was time to transition to a place that offered a slower pace of life. Twenty years in Milan is hard; everything moves so fast, the city offers so many choices... my life was so veloce – fast-moving. I craved peacefulness and nature.
One night, a friend of my brother – a composer and maestro – hosted a dinner party at his home near Castel San Pietro Romano. I remember the night clearly… it was August, and I was shocked by the panorama over the mountains towards Rome, with a glimmer of the sea just beyond. I remember saying aloud, “This is the place where I want to live for the rest of my life.” I was captivated by the town: the residents, Mayor Gianpaolo, the hourly church bells, the cicadas in summer… You have time to listen to yourself here. The proximity to Rome is also a draw. I love theater, opera, exhibitions, and knowing that all of this is still accessible.
The first time I arrived in Castel San Pietro Romano, I went to Al Cafè for a coffee and one of the local residents paid for me! The next time, I paid for them. It became a ritual… One day me, the next them. In Milan, I’d order my coffee and not interact with anyone. Living here, you’re invited into the community. You learn about each others’ lives. On most days, I work from my studio here – though soon, from the coworking hubs that have opened in Palazzo Mocci (Castel San Pietro Romano) and in Capranica Prenestina. I’m a 20-minute walk into town, and have a big garden. Other days, I take the train from Rome to wherever we’re shooting: usually Venice, Milan, or Naples.
I love hiking in all seasons to Rocca di Cave, which takes me about two hours. Another favorite spot is the National Archaeological Museum of Palestrina, especially with its bookshop with great internet and ambiance. The MuDi (Museo Diffuso Castel San Pietro Romano) is another place I enjoy – it’s a big draw for cinemaphiles like me. And Nino Agriturismo for the food and the views!
Wake up in a traditional country home and enjoy your morning coffee with panoramic views.
