CHESTNUT LOOP

This trail follows the gently sloping topography as it passes through heritage chestnut groves dotted with the casette used to make mosciarella, or smoked chestnuts, in the Castagneto Prenestino Natural Monument. FOSSIL WALK

LEVEL: Easy
LENGTH: 1 hr

Walk along a country road as it passes several rock outcroppings with exposed fossils from when this area was covered by a shallow, warm-water lagoon. Be on the lookout for the information markers, which feature QR codes to direct you to additional information about each kind of fossil.

VALLE DELLE CANNUCCETTE TRAIL

LEVEL: Intermediate
LENGTH: 2.5 hr

The Valle delle Cannuccete is tucked below Castel San Pietro Romano between working farms and remnant agricultural terraces being overtaken by forest. Descend into the shade of maples and lindens that surround the waterfall before climbing into the xeric grasslands that led to this being a designated Natura 2000 site.

SACCO TRAIL

LEVEL: Intermediate
LENGTH: 3 hr

Follow this trail between Rocca di Cave and Castel San Pietro Romano as it weaves between limestone rock formations and working farms. Keep an eye out for dinosaur bones because there’s no way Tito was the only dinosaur out here.

MT. GUADAGNOLO LOOP

LEVEL: INTERMEDIATE
LENGTH: 3 hr

Walk across the municipality of Capranica Prenestina through mountaintop meadows and sparse pine forest. Admire 360° panoramic views, with views of the terraced hillsides to the North and hillsides sloping down to the villages below. In the spring, enjoy the sea of golden ginestra blooms.

CRESTE TRAIL

LEVEL: Advanced
LENGTH: 4.5 hr

Traverse the edge of the Monti Prenestini as the topography undulates through farmland, orchid-filled grasslands, and pockets of forest. Be prepared to take lots of pictures, from various vantage points along the way you catch glimpses of Castel San Pietro Romano, Capranica Prenestina, Rocca di Cave, and Guadagnolo.
