Explore the natural beauty of the Monti Prenestini region with stops to eat and see local points of interest in Rocca di Cave.
Begin your day with a coffee at Dantimi Pasquale in the main piazza, then head out to explore brightly-painted Rocca di Cave, where the first sauropod in Italy was discovered in 2016.
Learn more about this archaeological discovery and its significance at the recently renovated Geo-paleontological Museum, housed in the 9th century fortress on the highest part of the hill.
After enjoying the incredible panoramic views from the grounds of the museum, take the stairs out of town to walk along the gently sloping Fossil Walk trail to check out the impressions of bivalves, gastropods, and corals dating back to 90 million years ago.
Starting to get hungry? Head back down to Dario e Giuseppina Trattoria on the other side of town for a delicious lunch, where they serve just-cooked pasta from a platter on to your plate.
Afterwards, head out to see where your food came from at La Manderà Agriturismo, spending the afternoon helping to harvest seasonal produce or forage in the fields and forests nearby. Next, hostess Anna will show you how to prepare the fruits of your labor in classic Italian dishes which you get to eat. It doesn’t get more farm-to-table than this!
Depending on the season, head down to the Planetarium after dinner, which puts on stargazing and other events that highlight the movement of the night sky.
